Holidays in Franconia, Bavaria. Germany's Romantic Wine Region!

Prichsenstadt Town

Prichsenstadt Town is a remarkably well preserved example of the walled medieval villages that were built in Franconia in the middle ages. With the gatehouse, moat, watchtowers, old cobbled roads, wood framed and stone houses and over 70% of the medieval town walls still remaining there is much to explore. The village was first mentioned in the history books in 1258 and in 1366 it was granted "Town" status with all the privileges that this afforded its residents. Most of the buildings in the old part of the town, where The Stone House is situated, date from around 1500 onwards.

While tourism plays an increasingly important role in the town and region, the primary industry is still agricultural with viticulture being of particular importance. The town is surrounded by open countryside with vineyards to the north and farmland and forests to the south. As with most of Germany, the land is open to the public and is criss-crossed with cycle and hiking trails. The town lies in the Main River valley at approximately 200m altitude accounting for the milder winters and hot summers, ideal for vines and wine production. To the east lies the Stiegerwald Nature Park which is a forested escarpment rising to over 400m above the Main River valley. This has kilometers of hiking and riding trails.

There are two bakeries offering fresh bread and pastries daily, a pharmacy and an antique shop. At various times of the year local farms will sell fresh seasonal produce, such as asparagus, directly.

There is also a large playground for the children.
